With special evening access arranged through the Parco Archeologico, you'll descend into the hypogeum — the underground network where gladiators and animals waited before they were hoisted up through trapdoors. Then onto the reconstructed arena floor, standing where 50,000 Romans once looked down.

Marco knew the Colosseum like his own living room. Going down into the hypogeum is something I didn't know I needed — you feel the weight of the place in a completely different way. He also recommended a trattoria two streets away that made the afternoon.
We booked this as a family of four. The kids (11, 14) are not easily impressed and they were talking about it on the flight home. Worth every euro.
